Traveling Home With Your Puppy
Go-home day is exciting and a big day for your puppy, too. Whether you’re driving twenty minutes or two hours, the trip home sets the tone for the first chapter of life together. This page walks you through what to bring, how to set up the car, and what to expect along the way.
What to Pack for the Ride Home
Crate or travel carrier (required if you’re driving alone)
Towel or blanket from home or one that smells like the litter (we’ll provide one)
Puppy-safe wipes or paper towels in case of accidents
Collar and leash (even though your puppy won’t walk yet, you’ll need it for carrying in/out)
Water and a travel bowl (especially for longer drives)
Pee pads or a waterproof liner for under the crate or in your lap
Treats or a chew toy for comfort
A change of clothes for the driver or passenger just in case
Where Should the Puppy Ride?
If someone is traveling with you, the puppy can ride on their lap. Keep the environment quiet and soothing no loud music or sudden stops. If you’re traveling alone or prefer a safer setup, use a secured crate or travel carrier. Place it on a flat seat or floorboard with a towel inside for comfort and to catch any accidents.
What to Expect
Most puppies sleep during the car ride home. Others may whine a little or drool due to nerves or motion. Accidents are normal, especially if the ride is longer than an hour. Stay calm, speak softly, and don’t feel the need to interact too much—this is all brand-new to them, and quiet is comforting
When You Get Home
Head straight to your designated potty spot as soon as you arrive. Even if your puppy doesn’t go right away, it’s important to start creating the association from day one. Then take your puppy to their designated space (crate or playpen) and let them settle in. Keep the rest of the day simple no visitors, no errands, and no pressure. Just let them observe, rest, and begin getting used to your home.
